Communicating Research: Knowledge Practices in Action (P5101)

30 credits, Level 6

Spring teaching

On this module, you’ll develop the skills required to communicate research in ways that are meaningful to appropriate publics or stakeholders. You’ll explore integrative research designs that involve public participation in knowledge production and exchange. You’ll also consider different ways of understanding the value, ownership and control of research.

You’ll build on elements of previous core modules around:

  • digital literacies
  • audience research
  • the platform economy.

You’ll engage with a range of communication formats, including:

  • policy briefings
  • formal reports
  • informational websites
  • live events.

You’ll plan and implement a public communication project, either around your dissertation research or the work of researchers who have inspired you during your degree.

Research is a key activity in many enterprises beyond the academy. Being able to communicate and evaluate ideas with impact among different audiences is core to your professional development. You’ll develop skills in:

  • project management
  • public engagement
  • impact analysis.

You’ll do this by bringing specialist media and communications research to life in the broader information marketplace.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 50 hours of contact time and about 250 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
