Queer Brighton and Sussex: Histories, Heritage, and Aesthetics (Q3561)

15 credits, Level 5

Spring teaching

On this module, you’ll explore queer histories, heritage and aesthetics through creative, critical and community-based approaches. Rooted in queer and intersectional approaches and theories, you’ll draw from the Brighton history of Queer activism and culture at Sussex.

You’ll examine and use creative practice, storytelling and archiving to challenge dominant narratives and reimagine obscured histories. You’ll reflect on whose stories are told, how they are preserved and the politics of queer visibility. You’ll also address the history of “Sexual Dissidence” to reflect on the role of Sussex as a site of queer thought and activism.

By the end of the module, you’ll produce your own contributions to queer heritage. Through designated sessions with local partners, you’ll also learn about employment in the culture industry.
