Spring teaching
On this module you’ll explore key legal frameworks, elements and case studies in technology regulation and intellectual property (IP) law. You’ll consider practical legal tools for navigating digital environments.
You’ll learn about:
- copyright issues and generative AI
- source code protection, confidentiality and trade secrets
- patents and AI inventorship
- cybercrime and cybersecurity
- trade marks, image rights and avatars
- data protection and cross-border data sharing.
These topics include introductions to relevant legal frameworks, and practical applications on selected case scenarios.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 21 hours of contact time and about 129 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27.
