Introduction to Childhood and Youth (X3229)

Autumn teaching
On this module, you’ll explore the interdisciplinary field of Childhood and Youth Studies. You’ll address how childhood and youth have been shaped historically and examine key theories and models that explain young people’s lived experiences.
You’ll learn how different disciplines approach childhood and youth and how these ideas can inform practice, including perspectives from:
- education
- psychology
- sociology
- anthropology
- geography
- the arts
- literature.
You’ll also evaluate research, build arguments and reflect critically on evidence and perspectives. Alongside this, you’ll develop your study skills, confidence and ability to think independently, collaboratively and analytically.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 44 hours of contact time and about 256 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology.
