Applying Professional Knowledge (801X1PT)
30 credits, Level 7 (Masters)
All year
On this module, you'll design and deliver a unit of work centred on a selected pedagogic focus, developing your understanding of curriculum, pedagogy, lesson planning, adaptive teaching and assessment practices. The 6,000-word assignment critically engages with research, policy and practice, evaluating your own teaching and its impact on your placement school.
The module is delivered over the Autumn and Spring terms, integrating University and School-based learning. You'll consult your Curriculum Tutor and school-based Mentor to identify a focus within your specialist curriculum area (KS2, KS3, KS4 or Post 16) and plan a unit of work taught over 4-6 hours of pupil contact time during Professional Practice 1.
Teaching includes lectures, workshops and seminars, alongside academic tutorials where you’ll receive feedback on your assignment. Curriculum and Professional Studies Canvas sites provide pedagogic materials, references and exemplars to support your learning.
Assessment
100%: Written assessment (Essay)
Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 65 hours of contact time and about 235 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
