Theory, Methods and Values in Practice 2 (866L5)

Autumn and spring teaching

This module is directly linked with the second practice placement. You will join a TMVIP group relevant to your practice placement.

This module includes:

  • critical examination of theoretical concepts and disciplinary knowledge that inform the process of assessment
  • planning
  • intervention and review in social work practice
  • reflection, with creativity and imagination, on the contribution of personal experience and empirical research to the development of effective social work practice in the field
  • establishment of the observation skills necessary for effective communication with people who use services
  • exploration of the contested and ambiguous values and ethics of social work in the field in question and of the dynamics of power and discrimination through which they are applied or negotiated
  • consolidation and development of a systematic understanding and critical awareness of a range of methods and approaches relevant to the interprofessional context of contemporary practice.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 101 hours of contact time and about 199 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2025/26. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
