About Music

We are a diverse group of academic staff, who are actively engaged in researching, performing and teaching Music.

We have expertise in composition, opera and musical theatre and new musical technologies.

The Centre for Research in Opera and Music Theatre, runs a number of research projects in collaboration with Glyndebourne Opera House.

We also maintain the Experimental Music Technologies Lab, where research into musical informatics and music performance technologies is conducted in collaboration with the informatics department.

Our students have 24-hour access to dedicated computer workstations, practice rooms with pianos, production studios and online recording libraries, as well as electronic studios for recording and post-production, and venues on campus for live performances.

We also run a contemporary music group and organise weekly research seminars and concerts, so students can perform, exchange ideas and collaborate with other students and professional musicians.

We offer scholarships and prizes to our undergraduate students, including:

  • The David Osmond-Smith Prize awarded to the graduating student who has written the most academically rigorous essay/dissertation over the course of his or her studies
  • Sir Thomas Beecham Scholarship awarded to a first year student who has shown skills as an outstanding instrumentalist, outstanding academic work and contribution to music in general
  • The Gazelle Twin Scholarship for Women in Music Technology available to a woman, trans or non-binary applicant taking up a place on a Music or Music Technology BA at Sussex.
