Sussex Modernism: Retreat and Rebellion

Sussex Modernism posterSussex Modernism: Retreat and Rebellion was an exhibition at Two Temple Place, London (28th January 2017-23rd April 2017).  It was curated by Hope Wolf, Co-Director of the Centre for Modernist Studies. The exhibition explored a concentration of over forty modernists in rural, wooded and coastal Sussex. It made fresh connections between celebrated names, uncovered new stories about neglected artists, and constructed a narrative placing modernism within the context of international and regional history. It explored modernists’ attitudes to the use of place and art as a means of repairing from, and protesting, modern life. The exhibition drew on regional archives and collections: Charleston, Ditchling Museum of Art & Craft, the De La Warr Pavilion, Farley’s House and Gallery, Jerwood Gallery (now Hastings Contemporary), Royal Pavilion and Museums, Towner Art Gallery, Pallant House Gallery, and West Dean; also private and national collections. A catalogue was published to accompany the exhibition.
