Physics Summer School stories: Hao Chun (Ian) Chen
Hao Chun, from the USA, reflects on his summer of study and shares tips and advice for those considering Physics Summer School at Sussex.
‘A highlight of my academic career’
The Physics Summer School covers a whole year’s worth of physics in just eight weeks. This allows me to focus on other classes during the school year. This was the main reason behind my decision to enter this programme. I also wanted to travel to Europe and the UK, so the location was a plus.
There are lots of opportunities to ask questions during classes and throughout the week. There are around three to five hours of teaching time per day from Monday to Thursday with tutors and professors, so it is easy to get help.
I knew that practice problems were the only way for me to fully understand the concepts, so I reviewed and redid workshop questions, quizzes, and the practice midterm and final exams.
The programme met my academic aims and exceeded my expectations. I knew I was going to enjoy my time, but I wasn’t expecting to meet the people I did and have as much fun with them. This was definitely a highlight of my academic career.
Take advantage of every opportunity the programme offers, including the Gold gym membership, weekly social events, access to academic help, and more. Download the Brighton and Hove Bus app and buy a student 24-hour pass if you plan on taking the bus anywhere.
On the programme I started to realise how physics, like biology, can be interesting because it delves into the microscopic world. I started to understand the things I took for granted, like electricity, television and mobile phones. While I still don’t completely know how these equipment work, I understand the complexity and knowledge required to build them.
