Physics Summer School stories: Sidney Chang

Sidney, from the USA, discusses how the Summer School enhanced her understanding of physics, and the ‘contagious energy’ of Brighton.

‘I can’t recommend this programme enough’

Sidney Chang

When considering what study abroad programme I wanted to attend, Sussex’s location and the lab credits stood out to me. I loved Brighton and felt it was the perfect environment for me to study hard during the week and enjoy my weekends off.

I adapted to the intensive nature of the programme by trying my best to attend all of the activities on the timetable. The skills classes clarified content I was particularly confused about. I made sure to do as many practice problems as possible, both from the textbook and the skills classes.

Help was easy to access during the whole programme. Whether approaching a professor in person or emailing the Summer School inbox, I was guaranteed a quick and thorough response. I found support from the tutors the most helpful because they would go over questions I had in class.

My advice for anyone doing the programme is to relax and let yourself enjoy the experience. A year of physics in eight weeks may seem daunting, but you will adjust quickly with the resources provided. The professors and assistant tutors make sure no-one falls through the cracks. The speed of the programme is fast, but as the only content is physics, it was easier to decidate time to studying than I had imagined.

I quickly found that physics is much more interesting than I had initially remembered it to be. I have found so many ways to apply the physics content I learned during the Summer School in my daily life.

The energy in Brighton is contagious and the people are so friendly. I enjoyed new restaurants, went swimming in the ocean, and went out to clubs. I enjoyed the pier and the food in Brighton the most. There are so many unique spots to explore and we didn’t do the same thing twice.

The programme exceeded my expectations. I left the programme with a better overall understanding of physics. I took away so many memories and lifelong friendships I can’t recommend this programme enough and I wish I could do it all over again.
