Spring teaching

Achieving food security for 10 billion people while reducing agriculture’s environmental footprint is a major challenge of the next century.

On this module, you’ll discuss papers on the multiple dimensions of this challenge, including the:

biophysical
economic
nutritional
sociopolitical
institutional.

Taking a global perspective on issues, you’ll draw on global research and different regional case studies. Through this, you’ll understand the geography of agricultural production, its environmental footprint and malnutrition.

Key topics include:

global change and sustainable agriculture
food security
impact of climate change: mitigation and adaptation potential of agriculture
water and food issues
hunger and famine
emerging issues in food security: GMOs, labels, diets, urban agriculture, organic agriculture and food waste.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
