Project aims

We work with women-led groups to use sustainable energy for seaweed production in remote island and coastal communities. Focusing on off-grid Indonesian islands, we aim to replace reliance on diesel energy with floating photovoltaics (FPV), a solar energy alternative that floats on the water.

We’re seeking to empower women to become co-owners and managers of energy infrastructure, which will improve their social and economic resilience. Our focus is also to use energy innovations to improve the quality of seaweed processing and products in remote coastal communities. We’ll also support other community-based initiatives, such as providing a charging base for solar-powered boats.

We’ll develop resources to share knowledge on supporting low carbon energy transitions and equality across the Global South. POWERE takes a participatory action approach, working in collaboration with community members.

Project impact

Energy access

Demonstrating how to make FPV into a viable, off-grid, socially embedded energy solution for marginalised communities.

Gender equality

Strengthening women’s leadership in energy transitions, entrepreneurship, and decision-making.

Economic development

Enhancing income generation, reducing poverty in remote coastal communities.

Environmental benefits
