Broken Brains and Guilty Minds
Can neuroscience help us understand addiction as a 'broken brain' condition and should this impact how the legal system assigns blame?
Join Professor Hans Crombag for this public science talk, as he explores how the neuroscience of addiction might or might not inform the law and whether ‘new’ understanding from addiction neuroscience challenges traditional legal notions of responsibility and culpability.
“For neuroscience, addiction is a disorder that impairs choice; for the law, it is a choice that produced disorder.”
Professor Hans Crombag is a behavioural neuroscientist at the University of Sussex, where he leads research into the psychological and neurobiological mechanisms of learning, motivation, and addiction. He is the author of numerous publications bridging neuroscience, psychology, and criminal law, and co-author of a forthcoming monograph on intoxication and prior fault doctrine.
