Webquests and science education research

One school selects three classes to carry out three webquests over the duration of an academic year.

Researchers:

Andy Chandler-Grevatt, Teaching Fellow, Department of Education, University of Sussex
Ross Palmer, Director of Science, Sir Robert Woodard Academy, Lancing, West Sussex

Overview

A case study involving the science department of a newly appointed 11-18 academy which hopes to improve the grades of its science students to those within the C - A* range, focusing on improving literacy in particular. Quantitative and qualitative evidence will be collected.

A "Webquest" is a means of providing a sheltered learning environment via the Internet. In this instance, webquests will be used to:

  • improve attitudes to science
  • improve extended writing in science at GCSE level
  • support assessment for learning
