Giddy - a community heritage and oral history project

The CLHLWR is pleased to support a new community heritage and oral history project led by young people from Longhill High School

Giddy is a project led by young people from Longhill High School in Hove to develop a two-part digital project, including an interactive map that leads people across the city of Brighton & Hove, listening to memories in the place they were made (via geolocation); and a website that will store oral histories, images and film, and enable people to remotely engage with the project.

Giddy will provide a supportive structure for young people to work with people who were teenagers in the 1940s to '60s, to ask them questions about their lives as young people during that time. They will work with the Mass Observation Archive (lead heritage partner) and Oral History Society to learn skills in archival research, curating, oral history interviewing and conservation. They will also work with Brighton Museum, Screen Archive South East and Brighton Festival to learn about heritage of the time period, and to research and select images for the Giddy app and website.

Giddy launches at Brighton Festival in May 2016 alongside an exhibition of films, interviews and images at University of Brighton, gathered from The Keep, Brighton Museum, Screen Archive South East and local residents by students from Longhill High School.

There will be a launch and private view of Giddy Brighton on 11 May 2016 at the University of Sussex at 4pm. For details see: http://www.sussex.ac.uk/clhlwr/seminarseries/spring2016seminars/giddy

Walk vicariously down memory lane with Giddy, an app-based walking tour that explores memories of Brighton & Hove life during the mid-20th century: hear stories of first kisses, endless dances, adventures and exploits.
