Hundreds of young musicians were recently welcomed to Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts to take part in this year’s Brighton & Hove Music and Arts summer school.
The summer school, which took place during July, involved over 370 children between the ages of 6 and 16. Nearly every school in Brighton and Hove was represented.
The programme was organised by Brighton & Hove Music and Arts (BHMA), an organisation which aims to provide high-quality and inclusive arts education and performance opportunities for young people across the city of Brighton & Hove.
The summer school was an opportunity for young musicians to come together and learn from experienced tutors in an informal, friendly setting. Courses offered included singing, music technology, pop and rock, as well as workshops for string, brass and woodwind players. Subsidised places were also available to help those from lower-income backgrounds.
All the courses concluded with an informal performance to give the young musicians the opportunity to showcase what they had been working on. There were also two evening performances in the auditorium during the summer school.
Laura McDermott, Creative Director, Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, commented: “We are delighted to have welcomed BHMA Music Summer School to our venue for the first time. It has been inspiring to see so many young people making music and enjoying all that our campus has to offer.”
BHMA is a part of Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival and also works alongside Glyndebourne, Rhythmix as well as Brighton Royal Pavilion and Museums. It is hoped that the BHMA will host future summer schools at Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts.
Emma Collins, Learning & Partnerships Manager at BHMA, said: “Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts has been the perfect environment for us to inspire young local musicians with a whole range of different courses all under one roof. We look forward to our continued work with ACCA in the future."
