BSc/MMath in Mathematics with Finance

Here at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Sussex, we develop what we teach all the time, with new opportunities and projects to help you transition through university life and prepare for your future career.

From 2021 entry, we have reorganised Years 1 and 2 of the mathematics curriculum to provide a solid foundation for our Years 3 and 4 advanced modules and better prepare our students for their chosen future career.

We’ve carefully enhanced modules that develop valuable skills sought after by potential employers, such as computer languages, mathematical programming and modelling. We’ve kept unchanged the ones that have already proven very useful to our students in both theoretical and applied mathematics.

So what has changed?

We have modified several modules by reorganising our core material and we have renamed these modules in order to reflect the new content. All the old modules have been withdrawn from Years 1-2, and new modules have been introduced, so do make sure you are aware of the changes before you make a decision on the offer we have made you.

We have also changed the year and semester that you will study two of our core modules.

The tables below show the changes in more detail but here is a summary:

New core modules

  • Year 1, Semester 1: Fundamentals of Mathematics, Linear Algebra 1, Analysis 1
  • Year 1, Semester 2: Analysis 2, Linear Algebra 2, Computational Mathematics
  • Year 2, Semester 1: Calculus of Several Variables, Ordinary Differential Equations, Introduction to Probability
  • Year 2, Semester 2: Real Analysis, Probability and Statistics, Numerical Analysis

Withdrawn core modules

  • Year 1, Semester 1: Introduction to Pure Mathematics, Geometry, Calculus (much of the material has been redistributed in the new modules Analysis 1 and 2, also eliminating repetitions)
  • Year 1, Semester 2: Analysis 1, Linear Algebra, Numerical Analysis 1
  • Year 2, Semester 1: Calculus of Several Variables, Analysis 2, Introduction to Probability
  • Year 2, Semester 2: Differential Equations, Probability and Statistics, Numerical Analysis 2

Core modules which have changed Semester

  • Year 1, Semester 2: Theory of investment has been moved to Year 2, Semester 1
  • Year 2, Semester 1: Financial Institutions and Markets has been moved to Year 1, Semester 2

The online prospectus will be modified in December 2020 to reflect these changes.  Meanwhile, if you have any questions, feel free to contact our admissions team at ug.admissions@maths.sussex.ac.uk.

Years 1 and 2 of BSc/MMath in Mathematics with Finance in detail

Take a closer look at how the new modules compare to the old structure of the course for the first two years of our Maths courses. This includes both the BSc and MMath.

Year 1
SemesterOld structureNew structureComment
Semester 1 Introduction to Pure Mathematics Fundamentals of Mathematics

The structure is changed, with emphasis given to defining mathematical structures via axioms. The module has been renamed  to reflect this change.

Geometry Linear Algebra 1

Some basic content moved from Linear Algebra to this module, in order to avoid repetitions.

Calculus Analysis 1

The content of Calculus and Analysis 1 (old structure) was redistributed to Analysis 1 and 2 (new structure) with more emphasis on integration.

Principles of Finance Principles of Finance

Semester 2 Analysis 1 Analysis 2

The content of Calculus and Analysis 1 (old structure) was redistributed to Analysis 1 and 2 (new structure) with more emphasis on integration.

Linear Algebra Linear Algebra 2

Added one important theorem, used in several later year modules.

Numerical Analysis 1 Computational Mathematics More support and emphasis on coding is given, as this is an important skill for employers.
Theory of Investments Financial Institutions and Markets This module has switched semester with Theory of Investment.

Year 2
SemesterOld structureNew structureComment
Semester 1 Calculus of Several Variables Calculus of Several Variables

Core material extended to cover optimisation techniques, used in all later modules.

The employability skills, previously part of this module has been moved to the new module Numerical Analysis.

Analysis 2 Ordinary Differential Equations

Analysis 2 advanced material is moved to Real Analysis (see Semester 2), and Ordinary Differential Equations contains material from Differential Equations (old structure) with an emphasis to applications and modelling.

Introduction to Probability Introduction to Probability

More examples added. The module was restructured to seamlessly connect with Probability and Statistics of Semester 2.

Financial Institutions and Markets Theory of Investment The module has switched semester with Financial Institutions and Markets.
Semester 2

Differential Equations

Real Analysis

In the new module we provide all necessary background Analysis for our Year 3 to Year 4 modules. Most content came from Analysis 2 (old structure). The new content builds on it.

Probability and Statistics Probability and Statistics

Added a section on the multivariate normal distribution, that is much more relevant to statistics and data science.

Added more statistical applications.

Numerical Analysis 2 Numerical Analysis

Some advanced content was moved to Year 3. Part of this module is now the enhancement of employability skills, including coding, group work, CV writing etc.
