Writing for Theatre (Q3026)

30 credits, Level 5

Spring teaching

On this module, you’ll explore different ways of writing for theatre. You’ll work with traditional forms such as monologues and dialogue, as well as more experimental approaches to performance writing. You’ll explore theatre as a creative art form where writing can include spoken words, movement, bodies in space and visual elements.

Through workshops, writing exercises and practical activities, you’ll develop your own creative voice. You’ll also explore the work of contemporary playwrights and theatre practitioners. The module ends with a rehearsed reading of your work, a portfolio and a reflection on your development as a writer.

Key skills you’ll gain include:

  • creative writing for performance
  • reflecting on your writing methods and choices
  • working with others to develop and improve your writing.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
