Directing Screen Performance (P4170)

15 credits, Level 5

Spring teaching

On this module, you’ll explore the creative and collaborative processes involved in directing screen performance. You’ll work with short dramatic scenes and engage in:

  • close textual analysis
  • rehearsal techniques
  • practical staging exercises.

You’ll do this to explore the expressive relationship between actor, director, and camera.

Emphasis is placed on:

  • interpreting performance objectives
  • blocking for the screen
  • shaping meaning through shot composition and editing.

You’ll develop industry-relevant skills in:

  • communication
  • direction
  • screen acting.

You’ll also foster reflective awareness of your own creative decisions. In the final assessment, you’ll work in small groups to produce two contrasting versions of a short scene, applying distinct interpretive approaches to performance and staging. Through collaborative production and individual critical reflection, you’ll build both practical competence and analytical insight into the craft of screen performance.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
