Exploring Local Film Cultures (P5060)

15 credits, Level 5

Autumn teaching

On this module, you’ll investigate and get involved in the local cinema culture. You’ll analyse the differences between cinema chains, independent, pop-up and art space cinemas. You’ll study:

  • the kinds of experiences these cinemas offer
  • the kinds of films they show
  • the kinds of spaces they provide
  • their distinctive business models
  • the cultural events that take place in them, such as international film festivals.

You’ll have the opportunity to study how local film culture, exhibition and film programming work, including visiting exhibition venues and hearing from local independent cinema directors and local venue personnel.

In addition to studying the historical development of film exhibition, you’ll come up with ways to record and represent information about a specific aspect of the exhibition venues featured on the module. This includes the way their programming works and the local film culture they create and support.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
