Autumn and spring teaching
On this module, you’ll research and write about a music-related topic of your choice.
You’ll gain in-depth knowledge and understanding on your interest. You’ll also develop skills in researching and presenting your ideas imaginatively and persuasively – orally, visually and in writing.
You’ll receive a framework and support for planning, researching and writing. This includes guidance in:
- choosing and framing a topic
- identifying research questions
- writing a project plan
- undertaking a literature review
- developing appropriate research methodologies - including the use of questionnaires and ethical issues in research
- identifying appropriate theoretical strategies.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 49 hours of contact time and about 251 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
