Child Language: Development, Disorders and Individual Differences (C8823)

Autumn teaching

On this module, you'll explore how children acquire language and the factors influencing early language development. While language learning may seem effortless, you'll examine various aspects of acquisition to understand this complex process.

Topics include:

• gestures and accents
• vocabulary growth
• the role of sleep
• language learning in non-laboratory environments
• the impact of television and electronic devices.

You'll focus primarily on typical development but also consider insights from children with developmental disorders and learning differences.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
