Introduction to Mathematical Biology (G5106)
15 credits, Level 6
The module will introduce you to the concepts of mathematical modelling with applications to biological, ecological and medical phenomena. The main topics will include:
- continuous populations models for single species
- discrete population models for single species
- phase plane analysis
- interacting populations (continuous models)
- enzyme kinetics
- dynamics of infectious diseases and epidemics.
20%: Coursework (Portfolio, Problem set)
80%: Examination (Computer-based examination)
Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 117 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
