Qualitative Research Methods (947C8)

Autumn teaching
Qualitative research methods are used across a wide range of psychology subdisciplines, including:
- social
- health
- medical
- clinical
- developmental.
You’ll gain hands-on experience in qualitative research methods and qualitative data-gathering approaches, including:
- interviews
- focus group discussions
- secondary data gathering.
You’ll also cover qualitative analysis, including:
- thematic analysis
- discourse analysis.
You’ll explore the strengths, weaknesses and practices for different approaches to topics. You’ll also look at the issues of quality in qualitative research and how to write up a qualitative research study.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 29 hours of contact time and about 121 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2025/26. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
