Studio Performance (W3113)

15 credits, Level 4

Autumn teaching

On this module, you’ll examine the role of the performer in the modern recording studio.

Working collaboratively with studio recordists, you’ll:

  • learn about performing with different microphone types and recording strategies
  • learn within the contexts of both analogue and digital studios
  • explore different historical styles of performance and recording across a range of genres
  • engage in hands-on exploration of practical approaches to multi-track recording.

You’ll learn studio performance techniques from first take to post-production. This includes appropriate workflow and basic recording, mixing, and mastering techniques to finalise tracks for distribution. You’ll perform and record a musical piece as part of the assessment.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
