15 credits, Level 4

Spring teaching

On this module, you’ll learn the core methods of electronic music composition and production. You’ll use software to create sounds, compose music and explore how digital music works. You’ll also learn about the basics of sound, digital signal processing and acoustics as applied in the digital computer.

You’ll use tools such as Max/MSP, Pure Data, Ableton Live and SuperCollider to explore sound synthesis, sampling, and music that can be generated by computer systems. You’ll also study the work of early electronic music pioneers and learn how their techniques are used in modern music production.

You’ll develop your own musical systems using creative coding tools for audio production.

This module will prepare you for the second year modules ‘Interactive Music Systems’ and ‘Digital Music Cultures’.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
