History Purpose and Power of Education Globally (X7001)

30 credits, Level 4

Autumn teaching

On this module, you’ll explore the wider perspectives on education and how it’s changed over time. You’ll look at why young people have been educated, how they’ve been taught and what they’ve learnt.

You’ll engage with questions such as:

  • Why do we educate and what is its purpose?
  • What seminal theories of learning and education have shaped history?
  • How has the purpose of education changed over time?
  • How does the purpose of education differ across the globe?

You’ll study the ideas of ancient and modern philosophers and educators. You’ll examine how the purpose of education influences classroom priorities, curriculum design, teaching methods, and assessment. By looking at the purpose and meaning of education through time, you’ll begin to develop your own understanding of what education actually is.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
