Spring teaching

This module provides the basis for understanding the shape and status of the English language.

You’ll study how the English language has changed, particularly since the Early Modern English period. This includes examining the social and cultural contexts that drove those changes. We give special attention to:

• the emergence of key dialects
• the relations between English and other languages in the British Isles.

You’ll also gain experience of a range of different varieties of English, including new Englishes.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
