Just Semantics (Q3334)

15 credits, Level 6

Autumn teaching

Some people dismiss others’ arguments with the phrase “that’s just semantics”. This is often when there is something tricky about the relationship between words (or phrases) and their interpretation.

In this module, we recognise that there’s nothing “just” about semantics, since making meaning is central to why we use language. You’ll consider what it means for a word or a sentence to be meaningful and learn how to tease out the different possible meanings of a word or phrase. You’ll practise the kind of precise thinking needed to analyse meaning in real language.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
