Screenwriting: Genre, Platforms, Business (P4167)

15 credits, Level 5

Autumn teaching

On this module, you’ll investigate how core storytelling principles adapt across genres formats and emerging platforms. You’ll analyse how audience expectations shift from cinema to streaming social media podcasts and interactive spaces, tracing the evolution of:

  • thrillers
  • horror
  • romance
  • comedy
  • hybrid forms from early cinema to TikTok serials.

Through case studies, workshops and industry-informed feedback you’ll design, write and position a short narrative that exploits the affordances of at least two platforms. Commercial realities are foregrounded: you’ll interrogate commissioning briefs, marketing data and IP management, building a toolkit for:

  • pitching
  • budgeting
  • rights negotiation.

By completion you’ll hold a polished cross-platform screenplay plus a strategic plan that demonstrates market awareness and readiness for professional collaboration.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
