Video Essays: Practice-Research (P3099)

15 credits, Level 6

Spring teaching

On this module, you’ll learn how video can be used as a research tool, both when analysing film and studying other topics. You’ll explore the history of video essays, including:

  • their roots in experimental and new wave essay-films
  • their use in academic research
  • their place in contemporary online criticism.

You’ll learn practical skills in editing film clips, archive material, and found footage, and how to approach issues of copyright law and fair use, all of which are important skills for:

  • filmmakers
  • production company researchers
  • freelancers working in the screen industries.

You’ll investigate how to make a critical argument using visual forms and techniques, and how to tailor your content to particular viewers.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
