Film and Social Change (P3097)

15 credits, Level 6

Autumn teaching

On this module, you’ll explore how media can be used as a tool for:

  • activism
  • development
  • social change.

You’ll gain practical skills in digital media production, such as:

  • documentary
  • podcasting
  • participatory video.

You’ll do this while critically engaging with global case studies of independent and community-led media initiatives.

Emphasis is placed on how communication:

  • fosters inclusive political processes
  • empowers marginalised voices
  • supports civil society.

Through collaborative projects, you’ll learn to translate research and social theory into compelling audiovisual campaigns aimed at real-world impact. The module integrates theory and practice, encouraging you to reflect on the ethical, cultural, and political dimensions of media-making.

By the end of the module, you’ll have:

  • created a short media piece for a social campaign
  • developed a critical understanding of media’s role in shaping public discourse and promoting sustainable development.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
