Body Politics, Technology & Optimisation (P3096)

15 credits, Level 6

Autumn teaching

As technology increasingly shapes human experiences, this module investigates the interplay between technology and bodily optimisations, questioning who or what is optimised, and at what cost. You’ll examine how power shapes perceptions of the body and health, focusing on digital health and augmented technologies. You’ll critically explore technological ties to bodily normativity - that is, the social norms that determine which kinds of groups are valued, and systematically marginalise:

  • disability
  • ethnic minorities
  • gender nonconformity
  • neurodivergence.

You’ll experiment with body technologies such as:

  • self-trackers
  • sensory digital health kits
  • social media filters.

You’ll do this to foster:

  • reflexive analysis
  • critical communication
  • socially responsible participation.

The module will equip you with skills valued in health, design, policy, education, and cultural industries. It complements digital content creation, enhancing abilities to produce inclusive, ethically grounded media.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
