Criminology in Theory and Perspective (L3105)

Spring teaching
On this module, you’ll explore key theories, perspectives and concepts within sociological criminology.
You’ll evaluate different perspectives, from mid-twentieth-century approaches to today’s cutting-edge theories. You’ll then place them within their wider social and political contexts.
Topics include:
- strain theory
- labelling theory
- radical and critical criminology
- left realism
- right realism
- feminist criminology
- masculinities and crime
- psycho-social approaches
- cultural criminology
- green criminology.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
