Spring teaching

On this module, you’ll study four classic criminological research monographs, gaining an in-depth understanding of their content and context. You’ll also develop the skills needed to critically analyse primary texts.

The monographs selected have been influential within the discipline and are widely recognised by criminologists as key studies. They include:

• The Jack Roller (Shaw, 1930)
• Society of Captives (Sykes, 1958)
• Hooligan: A History of Respectable Fears (Pearson, 1983)
• Criminal Women (Carlen, 1985).

You’ll read these monographs in full and explore their historical and intellectual context through lectures and seminars.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
