Why are human beings capable of extreme cruelty and violence? On this module, you’ll engage with this question through the work of Sigmund Freud, Erich Fromm, Hannah Arendt and Ernest Becker.

You’ll examine:

• the driving force of aggression, conflict and mass violence
• the psychological trauma experienced by victims
• the role of internal and external bystanders
• a range of psychoanalytical, psychological, sociological and criminological reflections on mass violence, psychological trauma and atrocity.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
