Spring teaching

On this module, you’ll explore the foundational principles of film as a visual art form and gain key practical and analytical skills relevant to film (and screen) industries. You’ll explore historical and contemporary cinematic styles, forms and artistic traditions. You’ll learn how aesthetic choices in lighting, production design and mise-en-scène contribute to visual storytelling.

You’ll develop core practical skills relevant to visual storytelling, focusing on:

  • lighting
  • production design
  • the role of the art department.

You’ll explore these elements through lectures, workshops and hands on practical sessions encouraging you to critically engage with the visual language of film. You’ll begin applying this to your own creative work, preparing you for progression into specialist production roles.

You’ll focus on teamwork, creative collaboration and industry-standard practices, which will enhance your career readiness and employability in:

  • film
  • television
  • advertising
  • digital content creatio.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 117 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
