Platform Storytelling (P4163)

30 credits, Level 4

Spring teaching

On this module, you’ll explore the principles and practices of platform storytelling across contemporary digital and screen media. You’ll explore how stories are created, adapted and extended across a range of specific platforms, including:

  • Instagram
  • YouTube
  • TikTok
  • Spotify (for podcasts)
  • streaming services such as Netflix or iPlayer.

You’ll pay attention to how these platforms shape the form, temporality and interactivity of stories. You’ll analyse platform-native formats like reels, shorts and webisodes, and develop your own work accordingly. Combining theoretical insight with hands-on creative production, you’ll develop:

  • short-form video content
  • multi-platform campaign ideas
  • interactive story structures.

You’ll critically reflect on creative work, exploring audience engagement, affordances of the medium and cultural or ethical implications.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
