Analysing Media, Film and Music (P5044)

15 credits, Level 3 (sub-degree)

Autumn teaching

This module introduces ways to examine and analyse media, film and music. It’s centred around their everyday-ness. You’ll consider how your encounters and engagement are sometimes deliberate, often accidental and occasionally somewhere between. You’ll explore a range of media, film and music phenomena such as:

  • big-budget cinema events
  • viral social media posts
  • music festivals
  • the playlist at your local supermarket.

This will help you hone your textual analysis skills and develop a toolkit to critically engage as much with what is ‘centre stage’ as what lurks in the background.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2025/26. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
