Making History B (V2000)

Building on Making History A, this module continues to explore the different ways in which we can approach and understand the past, in order to illuminate and enrich our understanding of the present. It adopts a thematic approach, drawing together perspectives from historians, art historians and American Studies scholars to reflect on the different ways we can engage with similar types of historical subject matter such as:
- war
- empire
- race
- gender.
Through your study of a wide variety of texts and objects – from photographs to paintings, and manuscripts to manifestos – you’ll become familiar with the central issues faced by scholars when they attempt to uncover and interpret the past – particularly the complexity of the historical record and the problematic nature of evidence. You’ll also learn to:
- build on your analysis of sources
- develop your own critical understanding of the past
- address a range of historical questions.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
