Autumn teaching
You’ll explore dispute resolution through theory and practice, taking an academic, cross-cultural and interdisciplinary view.
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is now a key area in legal professions and academic study.
The module has two parts:
- part one: you’ll study how ADR developed. You’ll focus on the ideas and influence of the Access to Justice Movement
- part two: you’ll examine negotiation, mediation and arbitration. Practical negotiation and mediation exercises will support this.
You’ll investigate the nature of dispute resolution, learning to approach legal problems with creativity and effectiveness.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 20 hours of contact time and about 130 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
