Anthropology in the World: Theory, Knowledge, Action (and back again) (L6304S)
30 credits, Level 6
Spring teaching
In this module we will explore how anthropological and ethnographic knowledge may be applied beyond the academy. However, we will also consider how anthropological engagements in the world open new conceptual questions. The path followed will be recursive, tracing theory, knowledge and practice back and forth.
Topics covered will include:
- ethics of engaged/public anthropology
- anthropology with and without ‘textuality’
- Queering Anthropological Knowledge
- from anthropology student to anthropologist in the world.
You will take one of three 4000-word assessment options:
- essay - in the form of theoretical discussion and analysis
- a report on an engaged project – including theoretical application and analysis
- a reflexive piece of writing that explores the relation between anthropological theory and experience.
