Advanced Techniques in Experimental Chemistry (F1801)

Analytical chemistry is an essential skill for every chemist.
In this module, you will have the opportunity to design your own chemistry project for quantitative analysis. Gaining these skill will give you full confidence for working in a chemical industry independently.
The aim of this module is to train you with experiences of using modern analytical instruments to analyse the chemical components of real samples. It will give you an overview of a variety of different techniques and instruments used by chemists to perform quantitative analysis. You will gain an understanding of the principles behind these techniques.
You will also gain valuable insight into analytical techniques used in chemical and pharmaceutical industries, including:
- natural sample handling
- chemical separation
- chemical quantifications
- experimental error analysis
- chemistry project designing and planning.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 92 hours of contact time and about 58 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology.
