Cell Pathology, Physiology and Anatomy (C7164)

Autumn teaching

This module introduces human physiology and anatomy, where you will study tissue pathology.

You will explore how our body systems (including cardiorespiratory, digestive, reproductive and nervous systems) work to maintain homeostasis. You will also learn what happens when organ systems become dysfunctional, studying their pathologies at cellular and tissue levels using histology.

You will have an opportunity to study the human body in detail during workshops in the Brighton and Sussex Medical School Anatomy Laboratory. You will attend an assessed practical, studying histological changes in diseased tissues versus healthy tissues, which will be examined in the form of a lab report.

In seminars you will analyse case studies related to human physiology and pathology. You will also present your work in groups, and write an essay on diabetes as a break-down of control and regulation, satiety mechanisms and obesity.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 34 hours of contact time and about 116 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
