Through your dissertation, you’ll demonstrate your the ability to:
- work independently
- understand, integrate and apply theories and concepts from across your course
- conduct research at a postgraduate level
- interpret and apply research findings.
You’ll set your dissertation in theory to test and explore an issue using an inductive approach. You could also develop and test a hypothesis, or evaluate a theory against a case.
The dissertation should go beyond description, providing:
- critical analysis
- synthesis
- interpretation
- application.
You’ll draw on the concepts, techniques and research methods you’ve learnt so far. You’ll demonstrate your understanding of the topic and its associated literature. This involves carefully planning, conducting, analysing and interpreting your research.
Assessment
20%: Coursework (Test)
80%: Written assessment (Dissertation)
Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 450 hours of work. This breaks down into about 21 hours of contact time and about 429 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
