Summer teaching
On this module, you’ll complete an independent extended piece of research and writing on a relevant topic of your choice. With expert supervision, you’ll undertake either desk-based research with secondary data sources, or an original empirical study involving primary data collection.
In preparation for your dissertation, as part of the separate research skills module, you’ll receive training in:
- research methods
- dissertation planning
- writing
- preparing a research outline.
Your dissertation supervisor will:
- help you prepare for your research
- help develop your problematic
- supervise your independent research and writing through one-to-one sessions.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 450 hours of work. This breaks down into about 2 hours of contact time and about 448 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
