Project and Policy Evaluation (785N1)

Spring teaching

On this module, you’ll gain the knowledge and practical skills in the underlying principles and practices of project and policy evaluation, monitoring, assurance and oversight.

This includes:

  • the theory and concepts of evaluation
  • the implementation of policy in projects
  • evaluation tools and approaches
  • economic, environmental and social evaluations
  • the ethical and social issues of evaluation
  • the evaluation of programmes and institutions
  • learning from evaluations to improve outcomes.

These skills are valued by employers in the public and private sector, especially in consulting, public policy and research funding organisations. By linking real time evaluation and implementation, you’ll learn:

  • how modern policy design and delivery are interconnected
  • the importance of learning during implementation
  • the importance of producing credible and robust justifications for spending public and private funds to achieve downstream outcomes.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 117 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27.
