Dr. Sarah Stephens, Shaun Ring and Matt Pollins

Our recent Law in the Age of AI event brought together students, sixth formers and legal innovators for an evening of exploration, experimentation and honest debate. Through live “vibe coding” demonstrations, participants saw firsthand how AI tools can be built and tested, while also engaging critically with the risks — from bias and hallucinated outputs to over-reliance and regulatory gaps. The response was incredibly encouraging. One Sussex student and a sixth former both rated the event five stars, highlighting “the expertise of the people hosting it” and “that we were given sources and recommendations” as particular strengths. For us, that balance — practical experimentation combined with thoughtful, evidence-based discussion — embraces how we teach law and AI at Sussex.
