Spotlight - Sadie Le Bas

Spotlight is a captivating documentary that explores the vibrant, yet exclusive music scene of Brighton through focusing on the underrepresentation of women and queer individuals. Central to the narrative is Rachel Bloch, a non-binary DJ who confronts these persistent norms by establishing Spotlight Events. This initiative not only gives marginalised talents a stage, but also fosters a community within the music industry, which often disregards their contributions.

Through candid interviews interwoven with energetic dance montages, the film offers an immersive experience, capturing the raw and dynamic essence of live DJ events. Spotlight provokes thoughtful discussions, inspires inclusive actions, and garners support for underrepresented groups. It’s more than a documentary; it’s a call to action, advocating for inclusivity and diversity in the music industry.

Essential viewing for advocates of social injustice and equality, the film seeks to catalyse change and empower the underrepresented through a compelling narrative and vibrant cinematic techniques.

Lone Star - Becky Curtis

Group members: Euan Braidwood, Max Kirkillo-Stacewicz and Saul Peck.

Clint, a self-proclaimed cowboy with a penchant for trouble, seizes the opportunity to stand up against Dean, who is mistreating his partner, Anna. This impulsive act leads Clint to face the consequences of his reckless behaviour. Lone Star cleverly reimagines the essence of a cowboy, weaving a narrative that challenges the foundations of self-identity. Clint must evaluate what is childish fantasy and what he truly believes in.

Set against the backdrop of the South Downs' rugged beauty, the film juxtaposes classic American Western motifs with the cynicism typical of British cinema, offering a unique and compelling cinematic experience that explores what it truly means to be a cowboy in a contemporary world. Clint begins to realise that embodying the spirit of a cowboy isn't about adopting a facade or engaging in reckless acts of bravado. It's about embodying the values of courage, integrity, and perseverance in the face of adversity.
