Join Robert Massey, honorary Visiting Professor at the University of Sussex, and Deputy Executive Director of the Royal Astronomical Society to find out if the new rush for space could block out the cosmos!
"In the last six years the number of satellites in orbit around the Earth has gone up sixfold, and there could be as many as a million by the mid 2030s. Sometimes described as a new Wild West in space, this rush to deploy constellations of spacecraft threatens to do irreparable harm to astronomy, and to the view of the universe we too easily take for granted."
Professor Massey works with partners in the UK and globally to protect the sky for astronomers, and all of us.
"This is a quietly urgent problem, one that unusually we can take on at the outset, if we can find a way for the benefits of space to be enjoyed at the same time as minimising harm.
SUSSEX UNIVERSE is a FREE public science lecture series hosted by the University of Sussex. Each talk focus on a different topic ranging across sciences, engineering and medicine. Enjoy an evening of cutting-edge science followed by an audience Q&A with the scientists.
